Just a quick one tonight, my bed is calling me and i’m keen to answer! This one is the beach below the town of Nas on the Greek Island of Ikaria, it is also the opening to the sea of the Chalares Canyon from a previous post. On the opposite bank of the river is the site of an ancient temple of Artemis, the Greek Goddess of the wilderness, the hunt, wild animals and fertility; there’s not much left of it now but the sea wall and the foundations, but it is a beautiful site. I just found out the other day that this temple was originally built from stone quarried from Petrokopio beach on the neighbouring island of Fourni which featured in this post

The Goddess of the wilderness,Artemis, has another name called,Diana, isn’t it.She is the Goddess of Moon, right.
Ah well, now we are delving into areas that i dont know a great deal about, i believe Artemis was associated with the Moon, but i think the Goddess of the Moon was Selene… more than that i can’t say…
haha
I know how you connected with Petrkopio! Oh those guys are jokers! But one can learn a lot from them and it’s true that the marble came from there.

@ Diana Ball: you can read a bit about your namesake Diana (for the Romans, Artemis for the Greeks) of Ikaria at least at

Yes, she was associated with the moon too. She was then called “Semele”. Those ancient gods were in charge of many things at the same time :p
Thanks for the info Eleni, you answered a lot of questions i had when i was in Greece, and your blog has been a wealth of information about some of the history of the island of Ikaria, and the ancient Greeks, i look forward to reading more.
