Iceland – The Land of Ice and Fire!
Iceland is an incredible place and an absolute paradise for landscape photography. It has been described as the place where the world began, primal and positively prehistoric. Iceland is a young country (in Geological terms) and one of the most volcanic places on Earth due to its location on the tectonic plate boundaries of the Mid Atlantic Ridge, the country is actually expanding at a rate of about 3mm per year. Iceland has a total population of less than 340,000 people, crime is almost non existent, you can drink the water from the rivers and the whole country runs on clean renewable energy. Iceland is the place where the magic light of dawn and dusk goes on for hours and there is a spectacular waterfall or a wild windswept beach around every corner.
Photographic Tours with 2 professional photographers.
These tours are no holiday! Iceland has such an amazing diversity of landscape to see that you will not want to sleep. This will be 10 full days of non stop photography, from Waterfalls to Fjords, wild windswept coastline to snow covered mountains, red roofed churches to the Icelandic horse, complete with smoking, steaming tundra Geysers and bubbling mud pools. The itinerary always includes the best and most amazing places that Iceland has to offer.
These tours are run in a partnership between West Australian Landscape photographer Adam Monk and Icelandic Photographer Oli Valtysson. Both Adam and Oli have extensive experience running photo tours in Iceland and many other locations. Adam and Oli have teamed up to create photographic tours of Iceland and beyond that will truly knock your socks off!
Who should go on these Photographic Tours?
If you love landscape and nature photography, the adventure of visiting new and exotic locations and you enjoy travelling with a small group of people who are as enthusiastic about photography as you are, then these tours could be for you. You don’t have to be a professional photographer, all levels of photography are catered for and a high level of photographic assistance is available whenever you need it. There won’t be much time for classroom style workshops on these tours, Iceland is small, the travel distances are short and there is so much to see and photograph you just won’t want to sit still.
Fitness, walking & sleeping.
These are not hiking tours, however you will be doing a lot of walking over uneven ground and a good level of walking fitness is essential. Some of the locations are just off the road, but others will require a bit of walking, mostly over rolling hills or well defined paths. The bus is always close by which means returning to the bus or leaving some gear behind (to lighten your camera bag) is always an option, though it’s unlikely you will want to return to the bus, not with a landscape like this to see and photograph.

Weather.
The Icelandic people have a saying… “If you don’t like the weather, just wait 5 minutes!” and it’s true! Clear blue skies one minute to crazy stormy rain with spectacular clouds, to snow, to dead still with thick fog… all in one day. Expect to get wet in Iceland, because you will. Although Iceland is situated just outside the Northern Arctic Circle, the climate is surprisingly temperate, due to the warm currents of the Gulf stream which pass around the Island keeping much of the Freezing Arctic weather at bay. Remember though, Iceland is a very green verdant country because it rains a lot, and if we are lucky you will have thick moody storm clouds overhead for most of the trip. The clouds really do suit the landscape and make for the most spectacular landscape photography. The key to enjoying this type of weather is to be well prepared, have the right clothing and gear for the conditions. We will ensure you are fully prepared long before the trip begins, enjoyment and safety is our primary concern. After this tour to Iceland you will never look at rainy weather the same way again, you will want to be out in it taking photos!
Camera Gear
There is really no limit to the camera gear you take other than your ability to carry it. Just about everything is catered for, from Digital SLRs, professional and consumer, simple point and shoot cameras to medium format digital and even film. Whatever level of camera equipment you have, we will help to ensure you get the most out of it. Prior to the tour you will have lots of opportunity to discuss your current camera kit and we are happy to provide any recommendations and advise on what to bring, and even things you may wish to buy to improve your setup.
Small Groups are best.
All our Arctic photographic tours have a maximum number of 12 people, small group sizes are simply more fun! Especially when it comes to photographers. The last thing you will want are members of our own group appearing in your shots, and with a small group of just 12, and 2 guides, this is easy to manage. From personal group interactions, to hotel bookings and arriving at scenic locations, small groups work best.
